A police officer and a motorist are being treated in area hospitals after police say the motorist ran into the officer.

At about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Savannah-Chatham police officers were working a wreck on White Bluff Road just south of the Savannah Technical College campus.

One of the subjects in the wreck tried to drive away, said police spokesman Julian Miller, hitting an officer and driving through a chain link fence onto Hunter Army Airfield property.

The vehicle went into a watery area.

Officers went in after the driver and pulled the motorist from the car in the water.

Both the motorist and the officer who was hit were taken to local hospitals for treatment, Miller said.

Identities and conditions were not released Wednesday night.

Both directions of White Bluff Road from Derenne Avenue to Lee Boulevard were shut down while investigators worked.

Violent crimes detectives were on scene.

Miller said he expected the road to be closed down into the early morning hours of Thursday.

No further information was immediately available.
