Paula Deen and her family have been longtime supporters of the American Red Cross.

Deen’s son Jamie first donated blood in 1985 and has made an effort to donate every year since. He invites eligible donors to join him and his family by giving blood June 15 at the American Red Cross Blood Drive.

“Giving blood to the Red Cross is a small way to make a huge impact on someone’s life in our community,” he says. “By donating an hour of your time, you can lend a helping hand to our neighbors.”

The American Red Cross and Paula Deen Enterprises will host the blood drive at three locations — The Lady & Sons restaurant and the Inn at Ellis Square from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House from noon to 5 p.m.

Recently, the Savannah Morning News spoke to Paula Deen about her commitment to the American Red Cross.

SMN: You’ve done several blood drives now and all have been successful. Why do you keep doing them?

Deen: “Blood drives are such a wonderful way to give back. We’re fortunate enough to see amazing turnouts at all of our blood drive events, so I think we’re really making an impact. It’s awe-inspiring to think that one donation could go on to help save so many lives.”

SMN: This time the blood drive is at three locations. Will you be at one of them?

Deen: “Of course! I’ll be stopping by all three of them throughout the day to pop in and say ‘Hey!’ to everyone.”

SMN: What will the donors get for participating?

Deen: “Donors will receive a limited-edition signed apron, a $40 gift card for any of our Savannah locations good for that weekend only, and of course, gooey butter cakes in the canteen to help boost them back up after donating blood.”

SMN: Why is the American Red Cross important to you?

Deen: “When I hear about all the good things the Red Cross is doing, it makes me want to get involved. Our blood drives are such an effective way to really make a difference. For instance, did you know that one pint of blood could help save up to three lives? That means a lot to so many families.”

SMN: On a side note, what do you think of Jamie’s new show?

Deen: “I love it! I may be a little biased, but I’m so proud of both of my sons. Jamie’s show is going to be really special, and I can’t wait for y’all to see it. He’s creating locally-inspired recipes for the family table.”

HOW TO HELP

Those interested in donating blood are asked to visit redcrossblood.org and use the sponsor code “butter” to schedule an appointment.

Every day in the Southern Blood Services Region, about 1,200 blood donations are needed to maintain an adequate supply for more than 120 hospitals.

Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors age 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. For information or to schedule an appointment, visit redcrossblood.org and use the sponsor code “butter,” or call 1-800-733-2767.
