The Army's No. 2 civilian leader is planning to visit the Port of Savannah next week.

The Army Corps of Engineers says Under Secretary Joseph Westphal has scheduled a tour of the nation's fourth-busiest container port Wednesday and plans a news conference afterward. The Army Corps is in charge of a $652 million project to deepen 30 miles of the Savannah River to make room for larger cargo ships traveling between the Savannah port and the Atlantic Ocean.

Westphal's two-day trip to southeast Georgia also includes planned stops at two area military bases — Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield

Westphal is the second high-profile visitor planning to tour Savannah's docks next month. The White House says Vice President Joe Biden will travel to the Savannah port on Sept. 16.
