An Ellabell couple is homeless Sunday night after a fire destroyed their mobile home, according to the Red Cross.

About 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the 45-year-old female occupant was in the front yard talking with her brother when they noticed smoke coming from the back of the home, said Harry Walker, spokesman for the American Red Cross Southeast Georgia Chapter.

One managed to get one of two dogs out and the other called 911, Walker said.

A second dog did not survive the blaze.

While waiting for firefighters to arrive, the two tried to combat the flames with a garden hose, but they had to back away when fire consumed the entire home, Walker said.

The woman’s husband was at work, and came home to find firefighters from Pembroke and Ellabell still fighting the blaze, Walker said.

The Red Cross is offering assistance to the family.

Walker said the cause of the fire has not been determined.
