A Savannah man will remain in jail pending a preliminary hearing on a murder charge in the Sept. 30 slaying of Amber DeLoach.
Shan Demetrius Cheley faces a Nov. 15 hearing before Chatham County Recorder’s Court Judge Harris Odell following his arraignment Wednesday.
Only a Superior Court judge can set bond on a murder charge so Cheley will remain in the Chatham County jail.
DeLoach, an 18-year-old former St. Vincent’s Academy student and Islands High School alumna, was found slain inside a burning car on an area off West Oglethorpe Avenue near West Boundary Street in the Yamacraw Village area. While fire fighters were extinguishing the flames, they found her body inside the black Dodge Aveneger.
Cheley, 36, has been detained in the jail on charges of contempt of court and cocaine possession since Oct. 4 while detectives worked the forensic evidence.
