A large group of veterans of World War II and the Korean War are set to visit Washington, D.C. this weekend.
The group of 31 military veterans from the greater Savannah area will depart by chartered bus at 9 a.m. Friday from the Georgia Air National Guard Base off Dean Forest Road at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
Since 2009, Honor Flight Savannah, a local non-profit organization, has carried hundreds of local veterans to the nation’s capital specifically to visit the World War II and Korean War memorials. Trips typically include visits to other unique District of Columbia-area sites including Arlington Cemetery and museums.
“Honor Flight invites all area citizens to give these veterans an enthusiastic send-off as they begin their trip,” said Carol Megathlin, with the organization.
Honor Flight Savannah depends on the community to provide these trips to veterans free of charge. To learn more about the organization or to donate, visit www.honorflightsavannah.org.
