ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Police say a 22-year-old man who they say leaped from the top of the Classic Center parking deck in Athens and plunged four stories during a foot chase with police is expected to survive.
Athens-Clarke County police say Christopher Lee Porterfield of Danielsville fell four stories, struck a concrete retaining wall and landed on a ground-floor patio Thursday morning.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1fDpbxn) that Porterfield was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center. Police describe his injuries as not life-threatening.
An officer began following the man's car shortly after 5 a.m. Authorities say he entered the deck and sped to its highest level, got out and jumped from a ledge. Police said Senior Officer Jimmy King reached out in an unsuccessful attempt to grab Porterfield to keep him from jumping.
