WINDER, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a toddler is in critical condition after a large limb from a tree struck him in the head at his daycare center in the northeast Georgia town of Winder.

Winder Fire Chief Matt Whiting tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that 2-year-old Tripp Halstead was on the playground of the center when the limb crashed onto a fence and then struck the boy Monday.

Whiting says the limb was 12 to 14 feet long and likely weighed several hundred pounds.

The boy's aunt, Crystal Condon, tells WSB-TV that the limb cracked the boy's skull, and doctors had to perform brain surgery. He's being treated at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

High winds fueled by Hurricane Sandy were blowing through much of northeast Georgia at the time.
