We have officially hit the "dog days of summer," and while you could hibernate with an endless pitcher of sweet tea and your air conditioning, this is the perfect time of year to be a tourist in your own town!

Here are some things to see and do around Savannah while beating the July heat:

Hot off the stage

Head to The Savannah Theatre this month to catch the brand new show "Savannah Live!"

The theater cast celebrates their 10-year anniversary this season with this brand new production that features songs from every genre (pop, rock-and-roll, Broadway, jazz and country), but performed in new and exciting ways.

High energy dancing and the hilarious cast make this a fun evening or weekend afternoon of entertainment for all ages. Your cheeks will hurt the next day from laughing so hard! Check out www.savannahtheatre.com.

Arts central

Visit the Jepson Center to see the “Stranger in Paradise: The Works of Reverend Howard Finster” exhibit. Colorful and extreme, Finster’s self-taught artistry embraces a wide variety of subjects.

I personally was excited to experience something of this caliber in Savannah. The Jepson is by far one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon. The ArtZeum for kids and Café Zeum for a tasty lunch can lead to full day of entertainment!

Throw in a visit to the Owens-Thomas House and the Telfair Academy of Arts & Sciences, too: www.telfair.org

Neon + architecture

On July 19, join Isolde Brielmaier, chief curator of exhibitions at the Savannah College of Art & Design, for a deeper look at Iván Navarro's exhibition "Heaven or Las Vegas” at the SCAD Museum of Art.

Navarro has created a series of neon light wall sculptures based on the floor plans of 12 of the world’s best-known skyscrapers, including the Jumeirah Emirates Towers in Dubai, Lotte World Tower in Busan, and the Twin Towers in New York.

If you haven’t checked out the permanent exhibits at the SCAD MOA, there are some really unique things to see, such as the The Walter O. Evans Collection of African American Art and the 19th- and 20th-century photography collection. Learn more at www.scadmoa.org.

Now playing

Finally, date night-worthy movies are on the schedule at the Trustees and the Lucas this month.

On July 14, catch "Cape Fear," the 1962 classic thriller starring Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck.

On July 21, Tom Hanks returns to the big screen in Savannah, starring in "Big."

And I suggest grabbing your best girlfriends and planning a night on the town to see "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" on July 28. Ticket info at www.scadboxoffice.com.
