A Savannah man was arrested Thursday after he was indicted for starting a string of 2011 fires on the city’s southside.
Brian Jerome Powers, 50, was indicted on more than a dozen counts of arson Wednesday by a Chatham County Grand Jury, said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire & Emergency Services spokesman.
The indictment alleged Powers started fires in several jurisdictions, including in Savannah where he is suspected in the early morning Feb. 11, 2011 burning of a laundry-mat at the intersection of Waters Avenue and Montgomery Crossroad, Keller said.
During that incident Savannah Fire firefighters responded to four separate fires in the 8400 and 8500 blocks of Waters Avenue. All those fires — the laundry-mat and three set in trash dumpsters — were set intentionally, Keller said.
Powers is currently being held in the Chatham County jail, Keller said.
