ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AP) — A military base in middle Georgia plans to demolish a number of its older buildings and homes to cut energy costs and improve efficiency.

Robins Air Force Base officials say 14 on-base buildings, including four houses, will be torn down later this year and into 2013. Some of the buildings are more than 50 years old, have leaky roofs and structural problems.

The demolition is part of a plan by Robins commanders to meet an Air Force initiative to reduce property holdings and associated operating costs by 20 percent by the year 2020.

Six additional buildings on the base have already gotten the wrecking ball. Base officials say the total demolitions will reduce building space by roughly 92,000 square feet.
