USO Operation Phone Home
Nov. 7-30. The Coastal Bank, a leading community bank serving coastal Georgia, has officially launched a its third annual community-wide initiative to raise money for the USO’s Operation Phone Home, which provides pre-paid phone cards to deployed military personnel, enabling them to call loved ones while away from their families this holiday season. A $5 donation will provide a soldier with a phone card to call home.
Members of the public can purchase a phone card online at www.phonehomesav.com or visit any of following Coastal Bank locations to make a donation to the 2012 USO Operation Phone Home campaign: Johnson Square - 18 West Bryan Street; Stephenson Avenue - 412 Stephenson Avenue; Pooler - 501 West Highway 80; Godley Station - 140 Towne Center Boulevard; Rincon - 5799 Highway 21 South; Hinesville - 101 West Hendry Street.
Tinstamatic Portrait Studio at Oglethorpe Gallery
Nov. 18. Oglethorpe Gallery. Acclaimed fine art photographer Ellen Susan will demonstrate the 19th century wet collodion photographic process at her upcoming event, Tinstamatic Portrait Studio at Oglethorpe Gallery on Sunday, Nov.18. This occasion presents an opportunity for registered guests to experience a portrait sitting using Civil War era technology and marks. The public is invited to visit the gallery throughout the day to see the space and observe Susan at work.
“Johnny Mercer and Me!”
3 p.m. Nov. 18. Muse Theater. “Johnny Mercer and Me!” is a completely revamped story based on the life of popular American songwriter and singer John Herndon “Johnny” Mercer. Written by Miriam K. Center, the show was originally produced in 2009 at The Savannah Civic Center and has been completely reworked to reflect more of the life of Johnny Mercer and his music. All seats $20. Nicol Nixon Augusté to present lecture
4 p.m. Nov. 18. Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home, 207 E. Charlton St. SCAD Liberal Arts professor Nicol Nixon Augusté will explore the concept of grace in Flannery O’Connor’s life through the eyes of Sister Loretta Costa, a close friend and piano teacher of the prolific writer. In this recently conducted interview, Sister Loretta reveals new insight into O’Connor’s approach to suffering, writing and Catholicism.
