A fire broke out Sunday morning at 1520 E. 34th Street, damaging a carport, sending smoke into a house and displacing four people.
Savannah Fire & Emergency Services responded to reports of fire at the residence at 9:51 a.m. The fire was contained and its damage was limited to the exterior open carport area, said Savannah Fire spokesman Mark Keller. Firefighters had to remove part of a ceiling to ensure that the fire had not spread into the house, he said, but smoke made it inside.
Power had to be cut off for the residence, causing three adults and one teenager to be displaced, Keller said. The family was provided with funds for food and temporary shelter, said Robin Wingate, executive director of the American Red Cross Southeast Georgia Chapters.
Wingate said that additional assistance, such as first-month rent or deposit, may be provided if the family is unable to return to the residence and needs additional assistance to re-establish a household.
Keller said the cause of the fire had not been determined as of Sunday afternoon.
