A Savannah man has been charged by three different local law enforcement agencies.
Bernard Simmons Jr., 20, of West 54th Street, was already in the Chatham County jail when a Savannah-Chatham police detective served him with a warrant for armed robbery, said Julian Miller, police spokesman. On Monday, another Savannah-Chatham detective served Simmons with a separate warrant for theft by receiving when it was determined the car Simmons was allegedly driving during an armed robbery was stolen.
The Savannah-Chatham police department’s robbery charges against Simmons stem from a Nov. 14 incident when a Savannah man reported four men in a blue Saturn stopped beside him as he was walking in west Savannah. Two men got out, pointed guns at the victim and robbed him of cash, his driver’s license and a cellphone, Miller said. The robbery was one of several that day in which a car matching that description was used, Miller said.
The car was found parked on the 1000 block of West 35th Street on Nov. 16, Miller said. It had been reported stolen Oct. 31.
Simmons was arrested last week by Pooler police and charged with theft by receiving, obstruction by fleeing and obstruction by resisting arrest, Miller said. Effingham County Sheriff’s Office deputies also have placed a hold on Simmons for charges of obstruction and failure to appear, Miller said.
Savannah-Chatham’s violent crimes detectives are investigating potential connections to the other robberies reported Nov. 14, Miller said.
