The man who allegedly scammed his way out of the Chatham County jail Thursday night with another inmate’s wrist band and personal information is now back behind bars.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ricardo Sean Chambers just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Chambers was spotted in downtown Savannah and followed to Hardeeville, S.C., where he was arrested along U.S. 17, said Michelle Gavin, sheriff’s office spokeswoman. Chambers, 30, is being held in the Jasper County, S.C., jail and will be extradited back to Chatham County on Tuesday, Gavin said.

Chambers is being charged with escape and making false statements and writings.

On Dec. 6, Chambers stole another inmate’s identification wristband, and using that inmate’s personal information he was able to scam his way through the discharge procedures at the Chatham County jail, Gavin said. The wristband was lying in another inmate’s cell, according to the sheriff’s office.

Chambers was initially in jail for theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a controlled substance. There was also a hold on Chambers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Chatham County Sheriff Al St Lawrence said on Monday that his department’s internal affairs division is investigating the incident.
