A grease blockage in a sewer main is believed to be the cause of a blockage that sent about 620 gallons of sewage into a drainage ditch at the end of Travis Street on Monday.
The ditch flows into the Harmon Canal.
City water and sewer crews were notified of the spill at 9:28 Monday and had it contained within an hour. All agencies required to be notified were contacted, and spill notices were posted at the boat ramp at River's End. City officials disclosed the spill today.
Because the spill was less than 10,000 gallons, it is considered minor by state standards.
The city of Savannah has had about 20 sewer spills this year and has been operating under a consent order with the state to take steps to curtail spills. Grease blockages account for about 60 percent of the back-ups.
