A Port Wentworth man is in the Effingham County jail today, the 16th child porn arrest made by the sheriff’s office since June.
Michael Butler, 55, was arrested at his home on Friday.
A member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force discovered Butler was downloading child pornography at his residence in Port Wentworth, said Sheriff’s Spokesman David Ehsanipoor.
“Protecting our children is one of the highest priorities at the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, and we will continue to pursue these cases in the future with ICAC.” said Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie.
McDuffie says his office is actively making child porn arrests. Several of those arrested have lived outside the county but have corresponded with undercover officers in Effingham County.
All of the chats and images in question were unsolicited by the undercover officers.
The task force from McDuffie’s office cooperates with the Georgia Internet Crimes against Children Task Force.
The Georgia ICAC was created by the U.S. Department of Justice to help state and local law enforcement agencies enhance their investigative response to offenders who use the Internet, online communications systems or other computer technology to sexually exploit children.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation supervises Georgia’s ICAC.
