Savannah-Chatham police are attempting to identify and located two burglars who crashed a stolen car Friday morning before abandoning the vehicle and escaping on foot.
Police spokesman Julian Miller said the burglars were driving a silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo recklessly on Savannah’s southside to avoid officers responding to a burglary in the 13000 block of Canterbury Road about 10:30 a.m.
Those officers, Miller added, were not pursuing the vehicle. Instead police planned to use an SCMPD helicopter, Eagle 1, to track the suspects from the air.
But before the helicopter was in place officers discovered the vehicle abandoned in the Habersham Woods apartment complex parking lot not long after it crashed into a utility pole at White Bluff Road and Eisehhower Drive, Miller said. Patrol and K-9 officers attempted to find the suspects on foot but could not locate them.
Miller said the officers were responding to the initial burglary call after a resident found the Monte Carlo backed in his driveway with several televisions and some baby supplies outside the house that had been ransacked. Most of the items were recovered, Miller said.
