Job losses force working couple to seek help

Jane and her husband, Robert, have three children. Both are college graduates who lost good-paying jobs when the economy soured several years ago, then had to take work that paid much less.

They managed to adjust and get by until Robert lost his job. Until he finds work, Jane is the only breadwinner. They get no other assistance.

Jane and Robert are like all parents who want their children to enjoy the holidays. They want to see their eyes light up on Christmas morning, like in past years.

But this year, that’s not going to happen. And it pains them.

Their children seem to understand what their mom and dad have gone through. Still, the youngest child, who is 7, is excited about Santa and is looking forward to opening gifts on Christmas morning.

The Empty Stocking Fund was created by this newspaper in 1971 to spread cheer to children whose families are suffering through hardships during the holiday season. Contributions will be acknowledged in the manner requested by donors.
