Savannah-Chatham police said heavy rain was a factor in a Thursday afternoon crash on Interstate 516 that killed a 16-year-old and closed the highway for hours.
Just after 2:30 p.m. Halie McKirgan lost control of her car while driving in the eastbound lane near Veteran’s Parkway, said Gena Sullivan, police spokeswoman.
The car crossed over the median, rolled over and struck a mini van being driven by 30-year-old Felicia Hayes.
McKirgan was extricated from her vehicle by Savannah Fire & Emergency Service personnel and both drivers were taken to Memorial University Medical Center.
Shortly after arriving at the hospital McKirgan was pronounced dead, Sullivan said.
Hayes was examined for non-life threatening injuries.
The crash closed all of Interstate 516 from Ogeechee Road to Montgomery Street until police opened one eastbound lane about 5 p.m. By about 8 p.m. all lanes were reopened.
The Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the incident, Sullivan said.
