Smoke from brush fires near Interstate 16 and Interstate 95 affected traffic on both highways in the Pooler area midafternoon Tuesday. At 4:45 p.m., Pooler Fire Chief Wade Simmons said the fires were under control and all lanes of both highways were open
There was one accident with injuries in the area while the fires were still going, Simmons said, and he urged motorists to be cautious and slow down while traveling through the area. Firefighters, he said, would be working for at least one more hour.
Pooler and Garden City fire departments responded, as well as Georgia Forestry Commission firefighters, personnel from the Chatham Emergency Management Agency and the Chatham County Mosquito Control helicopter.
