The Savannah-Chatham police department’s Islands precinct performed a safety checkpoint on U.S. 80 on Saturday night by Fort Pulaski. The checkpoint was conducted for traffic going both to and from Tybee Island.

In all, 35 citations were issued, five arrests were made and three vehicles were towed, said metro police spokeswoman Gena Sullivan. Some of the citations issued were for people driving with suspended driver’s licenses, driving with open containers, not having insurance, driving under the influence, having expired or suspended tags and child safety seat violations, Sullivan said.

Metro police launched a 90-day traffic initiative on Aug. 14 in attempt to cut down on serious accidents. In addition to the increase in enforcement over the three-month period, drivers in Savannah and unincorporated Chatham County might see more high-visibility sobriety and safety checkpoints, Sullivan said.

With Labor Day weekend nearing, the department is reminding people who plan on drinking to plan for a designated driver, take a taxi or spend the night somewhere. Drivers caught breaking Georgia’s DUI laws, Sullivan said, will land in jail.
