The 2013 athletic inductees into the Effingham County High School Hall of Fame were presented tonight during ceremonies at the Rebel Gym.
Inducted were Paul Sumner, Ramona Wright and Lee Newberry.
Sumner graduated from ECHS in 1988. He played football all four years and was the starting quarterback in 1986. Sumner was 24-3 as a starter, with a record of 10-2 in his junior season and was 14-1 his senior season. Career statistics include more than 1,800 yards rushing with 6.73 yards per carry, 25 touchdowns and more than 1,500 yards passing with 20 touchdowns.
Wright graduated from ECHS in 2001. She was a four-year starter in basketball. Wright averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds during her senior year. Wright scored her 1,000th career point at ECHS on Dec. 5, 2000. She led the team to the second round of the state playoffs during the 2000-2001 season. She finished her high school career with 1,478 points.
Newberry graduated from ECHS in 1990. He was a starting defensive lineman all four years. The team was 40-8 during his career, which is the best four-year record in school history. The team won three sub-region championships, a region championship and state runner up title during his four years on the team. Newberry finished his playing career at Georgia Southern University and he was a member of their 1990 National Championship team.
