With new downtown record store, Savannah has two feet in the Graveface

There used to be just one place in Savannah for new vinyl and musty taxidermy. Now there are two.

Earlier this month, Graveface Records and Curiosities, 5 W. 40th St., quietly opened a second location inside of Civvies New & Recycled Clothing on Broughton Street.

So how’s business going?

“Very few people know there’s a Graveface #2 just yet, so there’s not much to report sadly,” laughs owner Ryan Graveface. “The few people that know tend to ask me if the first location has closed. I guess it’s strange enough to some folks that there’s one vinyl plus curiosities shop, let alone two.”

But Graveface #2 is about to shout its presence to the world. This Friday, the new shop is hosting a free Spook Show Soiree with ghost stories, a DJ set and music from a half-dozen bands, including Graveface’s own Dreamend and The Marshmallow Ghosts. They’re dubbing it “a black tie affair,” with 20 percent discounts for those who dress to impress.

“I thought I would highlight some of the talent of the lovely folks I have working for me currently,” he says. “From the folks pricing records daily that have various musical projects to the folks that I make music videos/movies with. It should be pretty ace.”

And in addition to the usual records and curiosities, Graveface #2 soon will take a shot at the fashion world, too.

“Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing a couple ideas that are exclusive to that location — both are clothing related,” Graveface says. “The first is a new clothing line I’m starting for Graveface, mostly alchemical/Odd Fellows-inspired imagery, silk-screened small T-shirt runs. The other is in regards to The Casket Girls. They’ll have their own little section of custom-picked new/used clothing with a section called ‘Little Magic.’ The first small batch will be for sale by this Friday.”
