A fire destroyed a home on Savannah’s east side Wednesday morning.
Savannah Fire & Emergency Services firefighters responded to the blaze in the 800 block of East 32nd Street about 10:35 a.m. after neighbors reported heavy smoke and flames coming from a house in the area, said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire spokesman.
The thick smoke and heavy winds created a visibility issue in the area, Keller said, but firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames in the two-story structure.
Damage was limited to the second floor and the attic, Keller said, but the damage made the residence uninhabitable. No one was home during the incident; the American Red Cross is helping the person who lived there.
Keller said the fire appeared to start in the kitchen, possibly inside a wall.
