The driver of a truck that crashed while speeding from a crime scene with a dying accomplice on Wednesday was indicted on felony murder charges in the man’s death.
Anthony Threatt Robinson caused the death of Benjamin Lamar Carter on Sept. 27 by assisting the victim in an armed robbery attempt at a local gold exchange, the Chatham County grand jury determined.
Carter, 35, was found with a gunshot wound in the back of a pickup that crashed in Ardsley Park. Police said the truck matched the description of one that sped from the Coastal Gold Exchange, 232 Eisenhower Drive after shots were fired minutes earlier.
Carter was declared dead after being taken to Memorial University Medical Center.
The grand jury determined that Robinson, 38, was a party to a criminal attempted armed robbery in which a bandit with a bag and handgun entered the business.
The seven-count indictment also charged Robinson with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon during felony murder, possession of a firearm b a convicted felony during an attempted armed robbery, fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer,, obstruction of an officer and making false statements to Detective James Hutcherson.
The indictment also included a recidivist count based on Robinson’s 1993 convictions for aggravated assault, theft by receiving, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
