An 86-year-old woman escaped her southside Savannah home without injuries after a fire broke out late Friday afternoon.
Savannah Fire & Emergency Services responded to the house in the 400 block of Barnhill Drive about 11:30 a.m. where they found heavy smoke coming from the left side of the building, said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire spokesman.
Inside the house firefighters found flames in the laundry room, a small sitting room and the attic of the one-story brick structure, Keller said.
They quickly extinguished the flames and limited fire damage to those three areas, but much of the house received water and heavy smoke damage, forcing the woman from the home.
Keller said investigators determined the fire started in the attic and entered the laundry room through the ceiling.
The woman said she’s make arrangements to stay with family members nearby, Keller said.
