A Superior Court Judge denied a bond modification this morning for Kimberly Moretz, charged with concealing the death of a Chatham County man.

Moretz, 40, was arrested on Jan. 11, along with her brother Kevin Lambert. The two were charged with concealing the death of Charlie Ray, 35, tampering with evidence and hindering the prosecution and apprehension of a criminal.

Moretz was the wife of Chad Moretz, 34. Chad Moretz was shot to death by a Savannah SWAT team member on Jan. 11 following taking his wife hostage and an armed standoff with police.

When investigators entered the hostage scene at the Whitehall Avenue home in Rincon, the partial remains of Charlie Ray were discovered. Ray’s torso and limbs were found in garbage bags in a rental storage unit rented by Kimberly Moretz in Jasper County, S.C.

An autopsy showed that Charlie Ray was stabbed to death. Investigators believe Chad Moretz killed in the kitchen of the Mortez residence on Jan. 1 or Jan. 2.

As a condition of bond, Kimberly Moretz is required to stay in Effingham County.

Her attorney, Caleb Banks, asked Superior Court Judge F. Gates Peed to allow Moretz to go to Florida. Moretz moved to Effingham County from Naples, Fla. and her bondsman is from there.

“She has no family, no job and no place to stay (here),” Banks said.

Banks said Moretz also had a job prospect in Florida.

Prosecutor Brian Deal told the court the state was concerned Moretz would not return for trial.

“By her own admission, she has no ties (here),” Deal said. These are extremely serious charges. We believe she is a grave flight risk.”

Kevin Lambert remains in the Effingham County Jail.
