Possible Johnson/Savannah High game expected to draw large crowd
Johnson High athletic director Michael Moore was scrambling the past few days trying to secure a bigger venue for the Region 1-AAA basketball finals.
Moore was relieved Tuesday after working the phones all day to line up Savannah State to host the finals Friday night.
The girls final is set for 7 p.m., with the boys scheduled to tip off at 8:30 p.m. The girls third place game starts at 4 p.m., with the boys third place game at 5:30 p.m. Tickets (which are good for admission to all four games) are $7. There will also be a $5 charge for parking at Savannah State.
The Atom Smashers won a coin flip to host the tournament on Sunday, but the Johnson gymnasium only holds about 1,500. A crowd of over 4,000 came to watch Johnson and Savannah High when they played at Savannah State last month.
Johnson and Savannah are the top seeds in the boys bracket and have byes to the semifinals. If the teams win their games Thursday night in the semis at Johnson, they will meet for the third time this season.
Savannah High won the first meeting, and Johnson came back to win the second.
The Beach girls are the top seed in the girl's bracket.
