The Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge won’t get a new name until the Georgia General Assembly reconvenes next January.
That is, if it gets one at all.
The already-confusing naming history of one of Savannah’s most recognizable structures took another odd turn this week when Chatham County legislators blew the deadline for submitting a bill with a recommendation for a new name, largely because of confusion over whether the name even can be changed from that of the late, thrice-elected Georgia governor.
“It has gotten a lot more complicated, to say the least,” Rep. Ron Stephens, R-Savannah, said Thursday, one day after the deadline passed for submitting a bill to rename the bridge that extends nearly two miles and crests 185 feet above the Savannah River. “It’s something you’d think would be simple.”
