A crash involving a police car shut down a large portion of Interstate 16 westbound for several hours Wednesday night while emergency crews and investigators worked the scene.
One Savannah-Chatham police car could be seen apparently crashed into the woodline area off the westbound side of I-16 just east of the Chatham Parkway exit, and another police car was in the ditch nearby as investigators worked the scene.
According to our news partner, thecoastalsource.com, a metro police officer was shot.
Police spokesman Julian Miller said he could not release any information about the incident, but that it was related to another scene at Burroughs and 42nd streets, which he also could not discuss.
There, an area was cordoned off with yellow tape as police processed the scene. Investigators could be seen photographing a gray or silver sedan that was parked off 42nd Street.
Police had not yet released any further information just before 10 p.m. Miller said police expected westbound Interstate 16 to remain closed for a few more hours. Traffic was being rerouted toward Garden City.
