A wreck on Savannah’s southside Wednesday afternoon sent one person to the hospital with serious injuries when the car he was driving and an SUV crashed head-on.

Michael Fredrick Medlin, 24, was in serious but stable condition at Memorial University Center after the 1:20 p.m. crash on Fulton Road, which runs parallel to Abercorn Street east of the Savannah Mall, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.

Medlin was extricated from his car by Savannah Fire & Emergency Services.

Medlin was driving a silver 2005 Honda Civic eastbound on Fulton near Navajo Road when it collided with a blue 1998 Ford Explorer driven westbound by Amie Marie Tatum, 25.

Investigators with the police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team said the Explorer drifted across the center turn lane and into the eastbound lane.

Firefighters had to secure the smaller car to keep it from falling into a creek, Miller said, using cables to fasten it to a firetruck.

The investigation by MAIT is ongoing, and no further information was immediately available.
