Hillcrest Abbey East Memorial Park has doubled the available reward fund for information leading to the return of remains stolen from the cemetery early this month.
Hillcrest administration contributed $2,500 to the CrimeStoppers Reward Fund to encourage information that would lead to the return a woman’s body taken late March 10 or early March 11. The woman died in 2001.
Savannah-Chatham police were called to the Wheaton Street cemetery March 11 after employees found two caskets out of their vaults. One had been damaged but not opened, and the other was opened and the woman’s body removed.
“We hope that by doing this, it will help in any way to bring this to the best resolution it possibly can,” said Kyle Nikola, one of Hillcrest’s owners.
A cash reward of potentially up to $5,000 is available anonymously for new information leading to an arrest of the thief and the return of the remains, said Catherine Neal, CrimeStoppers spokeswoman.
All information provided to CrimeStoppers is anonymous and can be reported 24/7. Tipsters can call 912-234-2020, send a tip through www.SavannahChathamCrimeStoppers.org using the report anonymously link, or text CRIMES (274637), using the keyword CSTOP2020 before the message content.
