The Chatham Area Transit Authority voted Thursday to terminate its contract with the international transportation provider, Veolia Transportation.
Chairman Pete Liakakis said Monday the partnership was getting too expensive, but referred further inquiries to CAT Attorney Ty Butler.
Butler could not be reached immediately for comment on Monday.
Veolia has 45 days to shut down its operations. After the company first started managing the transit system, all of CAT’s workforce became employees of Veolia.
The company brought on a number of new administrative staff, including CEO Chadwick Reese, who declined to comment on the matter.
Liakakis and other board members have praised the job the company has done, prior to Thursday’s vote.
The board, which used to be comprised of all the members of the Chatham County Commission, was reduced last year from 13 to 9 members and reconfigured to include more outside representation, including a Savannah city alderman.
Veolia has been in the process of developing a major overhaul of the bus routes to coincide with the fall opening of the new downtown transit center, which is currently being constructed on Oglethorpe Avenue at the Greyhound bus station.
