City of Savannah crews responded Sunday to a minor spill of 235 gallons of sewage at the intersection of Delmar Circle and Wilshire Boulevard. The spill was the result of debris and grease blockage in 8-inch diameter sewer main. Spills of 10,000 gallons or less are classified as minor under Georgia Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 8:58 p.m. yesterday, and the spill was corrected at 9:45 p.m. The blockage was cleared and the mix of contaminated and drainage water, approximately 4,000 gallons was pumped from the canal and back into the sanitary sewer system. The tide was going out and the spill could not be contained. Lime was place on affected area. The canal upstream and downstream from the spill site was sampled. Spill notifications were posted at the spill site and Wilshire Canal at White Bluff.
The spill is the seventh reported so far this year in Savannah.
