City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 1 Merriweather Drive today.
The spill was the result of a sewer main grease blockage that caused an overflowing manhole. The total volume discharged was 720 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City water and sewer crews were notified of the spill at 9:18 a.m., and the spill was corrected at 9:54 a.m. Cleared blockage and will have sewer system cleaned and evaluated.
Staff will install a high level wireless alarm to notify of future surcharges to eliminate or minimize occurrence subsequent overflows. The affected storm system was contained, and staff implemented efforts to recover the contaminated water.
Notifications were posted at the storm system and at the Dutch Island community boat ramp.
All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
