A Chatham County grand jury on Wednesday handed down an indictment against former Chatham County Sheriff’s Deputy Cpl. Shelton Crowder.
The indictment was a result of an investigation conducted by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office on charges of sexual assault against a person in custody, said Cpl. Rhonda Bryant-Elleby, sheriff's spokeswoman.
Sufficient evidence to seek an indictment was obtained and the case was referred to the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office, she said. The alleged event with an in-custody individual was to have taken place Aug. 12, 2012.
The Chatham County Jail has a zero-tolerance policy concerning sexual misconduct with those in custody and follows the Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, Bryant-Elleby said.
