A Port Wentworth man faces several charges after Savannah-Chatham police officials say he attempted to shoot at a police officer last week while fleeing Yamacraw Village where he was being questioned.

Quintavious Jron Lee, 19, faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm in committing a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, pointing a weapon at another, carrying a pistol without a license, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and loitering and prowling after the April 18 incident.

A Downtown Precinct officer was questioning Lee and another man about 5:40 p.m. that day when he realized they fit the description of suspects in a pair of robberies in the area, said Julian Miller, police spokesman.

While the other man was handcuffed when he resisted the officer’s attempt to search him for a weapon, Lee backed away and started running, Miller said. As he attempted to flee he dropped a pistol, stopped, picked it up and pointed in the direction of the officer and the other man. Miller said Lee pulled the trigger but the gun misfired.

The officer threw the man in handcuffs to the ground and shielded him, but he did not fire back at Lee because of several people, including children, in the immediate area, Miller said.

Within moments of the incident Lee was taken into custody by other officers who were saturating the area, Miller said.

Lee has a record dating back to 2010 with Savannah- Chatham police that includes arrests for aggravated battery, disrupting public schools, obstruction of a police officer and two charges for probation violation.

Savannah-Chatham police detectives are continuing to investigate the robberies to determine if Lee or the other man were involved.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637). Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

A confidential Tip Line also is open directly to investigators at 912-525-3124.
