Armstrong Atlantic State women’s basketball coach Matt Schmidt has resigned his post, the school announced Tuesday.
Schmidt said the move was to pursue other career opportunities.
“I’d like to thank Armstrong for giving me the opportunity to be the head coach of Pirate women’s basketball for the past five seasons,” Schmidt said. “I am especially thankful to University President Dr. Linda Bleicken and athletic director Lisa Sweany for their continued support as well as former Armstrong president Dr. Thomas Jones and athletic director Eddie Aenchbacher for bringing me to Savannah in 2008.”
Schmidt leaves the Pirates after serving at the helm of the women’s basketball program for the last five seasons, compiling a 60-73 overall record and a 33-42 mark in the Peach Belt Conference. The Pirates went 13-14 in 2012-13, advancing to the Peach Belt Conference tournament and knocking off the program’s highest-ranking opponent, No. 5 USC Aiken, on Feb. 9.
“We wish coach Schmidt the best of luck,” said Armstrong athletics director Lisa Sweany. “The Armstrong athletic department and the University as a whole has been fortunate to have him coaching our student-athletes for the last five seasons. We are sorry to see him leave us, and I’m certain he will be successful in his future endeavors.”
Schmidt became the seventh women’s basketball head coach in Armstrong history in September of 2008, joining the Pirates from Northern Kentucky, where he served as an assistant coach for four seasons.
A native of Johnstown, Pa., Schmidt graduated from West Liberty State in 1996 and earned his master’s degree from West Virginia in 2000.
Armstrong will conduct a national coaching search for a new head women’s basketball coach, beginning immediately.
