City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 125 Tibet Ave. earlier today. The spill was the result of sewage discharge caused by a grease blockage in the sewer main.
The total volume discharged was 125 gallons, which is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 9:15 a.m. today, and the spill was corrected at 9:40 p.m. The blockage was cleared, and the sewer system will be cleaned and evaluated.
The staff will install a high level wireless alarm to notify of future surcharges to eliminate or minimize occurrence of subsequent overflows. The affected canal was contained, and staff implemented efforts to recover the contaminated water.
All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
