The Economic Opportunity Authority has received a $5,000 grant from the Home Depot Foundation to develop a community garden serving local veterans.
EOA officials will kick-off the Community Garden on Friday during Senior Corps Week, an initiative to celebrate the extraordinary impact of Senior Corps volunteers who volunteer their time to make our community a healthier and stronger community through volunteer service.
The week-long recognition will highlight how Americans age 55 and over employ their wisdom, professional skills, and experience to solve pressing problems and strengthen communities. Senior volunteers and community volunteers have committed their time and energy to construct the garden.
“We saw a high rate of food insecurity in our community and decided to develop a Community Garden not only to provide positive recreational activities for seniors and veterans but also provide a food supply for local veterans,” said Debbie W. Walker, Project Director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of EOA. . “We were delighted to receive a $5,000 gift card from The Home Depot Foundation – our volunteers were so happy to get the supplies they needed!”
One of the strategic priority areas for the Corporation for National and Community Service which provides funding for our Senior Corps Program is serving those who served us, as well as engaging the talents of our veterans and military families, she said.
The Home Depot Foundation’s Community Impact Grants Program supports the work that local nonprofit organizations are doing to improve the lives of veterans and their families.
“The Home Depot Foundation is committed to ensuring that every veteran has a safe place to call home,” said Kelly Caffarelli, president of The Home Depot Foundation. “We are proud to work with Economic Opportunity Authority in our efforts to give back to those men and women who have so bravely served our country.”
