NAHUNTA, Ga. (AP) — Sheriff's officials in coastal Georgia are working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to identify a set of skeletal remains that were found beside a road.

GBI special agent Mike McDaniel tells the Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/1cevo5v ) that hunters found the remains in a wooded area near a road in Brantley County Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say they collected part of the skeleton before a heavy thunderstorm Tuesday afternoon and returned Wednesday to retrieve more evidence.

McDaniel says the unidentified remains will be sent to the GBI crime lab in Savannah for an autopsy. McDaniel says authorities are also collecting missing persons reports from local police departments to try identifying the remains.
