ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Department of Public Health officials say they're investigating three cases of a gastrointestinal illness that has sickened more than 370 people in 15 states.
Department spokeswoman Nancy Nydam said Wednesday that three Georgia women have fallen ill with Cyclosporiasis (sy-kloh-spohr-EYE'-uh-sihs), a parasite known to cause diarrhea, stomach pain, cramps and fatigue about a week after exposure. One case required hospitalization.
Nydam says Georgia health officials are working with the Centers for Disease Control to investigate the outbreak of the illness. Officials have said 372 people have been sickened by the parasite nationally. Health officials in some states have linked the bug to a prepackaged salad mix.
The cause of the Georgia illnesses hasn't been determined, but Nydam says Cyclosporiasis (sy-kloh-spohr-EYE'-uh-sihs) is typically linked to berries, leafy greens and herbs.
