Recruits aid furry friends
11 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 24. Savannah-Chatham Animal Control Center. Recruits at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Garden City are rallying to the aid of dogs and cats in the Savannah-Chatham Animal Control Center. Cadets For Critters will be at the center Aug. 24 to collect monitory donations or food and essentials. To help the cause, they will be selling hot dogs for $1 each. In addition to cash, cadets also hope to collect donations of meat-flavored baby food, dog treats (peanut butter, cheese, rawhides and pigs ears); dry or canned  puppy or kitten food (Pedigree preferred), flea and tick shampoos, towels of any size, combs and nail clippers, dog and cat toys, new or gently used crates, puppy milk replacement, bleach, laundry or dish soap, disinfectant wipes, paper towels or gift cards to Petsmart, Kinkos, Wal-Mart or any pet superstore or print shop.

Back to School Expo
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 24. Savannah Civic Center. The fifth annual Ready Set Go! Back to School Expo is gearing up for an exciting year. This has become one of the largest family events in Savannah. Last year, this event donated more than 5,000 bags of school supplies. We are requesting your support to make this happen again. Parents appreciate the valuable information and donated supplies. Garage sale to benefit vision loss
9 a.m.-noon Aug. 24. 214 Drayton St. A garage sale to benefit Savannah Association for the Blind Inc., Savannah Center for Blind and Low Vision, will be Aug. 24 in the rear parking lot and inside 214 Drayton St. Bookcases, office furniture and supplies, chairs, tables, clothes, books on tape, household items and more will be available. Casting call for Thornton Wilder’s ‘Our Town’
2 p.m. Aug. 24. Asbury Memorial Theatre, 1008 E. Henry St. Auditions for Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 and 2 p.m. Aug. 24. Callbacks will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 25. This play requires a large cast (more than 35 roles) including both speaking and non-speaking parts. Men, women and children ages 11-75 are needed. Actors will be cold-reading from the “Our Town” script. Please bring photo/theater resume, if available. Performance dates are Nov. 7-10 and 15-17. Armstrong accepting applications for flex term
Deadline is Oct. 1. Armstrong Atlantic State University announces an Oct. 1 application deadline for the fall 2013 flex term. Ready to get started or return to college? There’s still time to complete semester courses this fall. The seven-week flex-term classes run from Oct. 9 to Dec. 10. Choose from a variety of core classes that meet basic requirements. Kids Fishing for a Cause
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24. Tom Triplett Community Park, U.S. Hwy. 80, Pooler. Kids Fishing for a Cause, a children’s charity event to benefit the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society, will be Aug. 24 at Tom Triplett Community Park. Boys and girls age 14 and younger are welcome. A $5 donation requested. Register at the park starting at 9:30 a.m. First 35 will receive a free gift bag. For safety, an adult must register and remain with anglers during the event. Prizes and awards will be given in two age classes for biggest and most fish caught, along with door prizes, and will be distributed at 2:30 p.m. Free bait and loaner poles available. All proceeds benefit Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society. 32nd annual Old Fort Jackson Auction
6-10 p.m. Aug. 24. Old Fort Jackson. One of the things that makes Savannah’s historic tourism so unique is the presence of authentic preserved forts dating all the way back to the American Revolution. Old Fort Jackson is one of these incredible landmarks and is one of the most extraordinary attractions in Savannah. Named after James Jackson, one-time governor of Georgia, Old Fort Jackson is a beautifully preserved fort along the Savannah River and is Georgia’s oldest standing brick fortification. As you can imagine, preserving this structure is no easy or cheap task. ‘Weekend Navigator’ classes
7-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays starting Sept. 9. Frank C. Murray Whitemarsh Island Community Center, 160 Whitemarsh Island Road. “Weekend Navigator” classes will be offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 10-2 starting Sept. 9. Learn navigation from the experts. Classes will meet from 7-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays for four weeks. Cost of materials is $50. Classes will be at the Frank C. ‘A Company of Wayward Saints’
7:30 p.m. Aug. 24. Armstrong Atlantic State University, Jenkins Hall Theater. The Armstrong Atlantic State University Department of Art, Music & Theatre’s Masquers theatre troupe reprises its summer presentation of “Company of Wayward Saints” on Aug. 24. ‘Street Walk’ Hand Up
8:30 a.m. Aug. 24. The Stacy Project will be walking the streets of Savannah and the homeless camps distributing brown bag lunches, ice-cold drinks and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. We will be searching out and compelling the lost to come to God and accept him as their personal Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Bay Street at the BP gas station for sidewalk prayer and to begin our walk. Brad Wells in concert
9 p.m. Aug. 24. Snazzy’s, 101 S. Godley Station Blvd., Pooler. Brad Wells is playing a live concert Aug. 24 at Snazzy’s. The live shows are split between a love of song writing and connecting with emotions to reeling in the audience with a catchy cover song exploding into a giant sing-along. The concert is free and suitable for all ages.

ADA Hugh H. Armstrong Sr. Memorial Kayak for a Kure
9 a.m. Aug. 24. Butterbean Beach, 45 Diamond Causeway, Isle of Hope. Welcome kayakers and paddle boarders! The American Diabetes Association is gearing up for the sixth annual Hugh H. Armstrong Sr. Memorial Kayak for a Kure event sponsored by PIER Commercial on Aug. 24. Registration is at 9 a.m. and paddle at 10 a.m. Come paddle the 3-mile course from Butterbean Beach to the UGA Marine Extension Service Aquarium, then enjoy lunch provided by Brick House BBQ, along with live music and a goodie bag. Early registration for our past participants is $40 per person available through July 31. After that, it will be $50 per person. Charity Gala Dinner and Silent Auction
Deadline is Sept. 1.Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, 175 Bourne Ave., Pooler. Nurses for the Nations, a Christian, registered nonprofit organization, is hosting a Charity Gala Dinner and Silent Auction on Sept. 20 at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. Help us raise funds to send medical supplies and teams to villages and tribes internationally who have little to no access to health care. The Silent Auction begins at 6 p.m. and the dinner and program begin at 7 p.m. Our special guest speaker is Jonathan Daniel from Zimbabwe. Help two residents in need
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 24. Islands Sports Bar, 348 Johnny Mercer Blvd. Islands Sports Bar will will host Bar Olympics for Charity to assist community members James Bowen and Tommy Palmer, who are battling serious health problems. This festive fundraiser features a fish fry, cookout, live music, silent auction, raffle and 50/50 drawing. Bar Olympics will challenge contestants in horseshoes, cornhole, darts and pool. Prizes will be awarded to winners. The event is 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 24. Other ways to help James or Tommy include donating gift certificate or items for the silent auction, raffles or prizes; giving directly to www.gatransplant.org or call 912-224-2657 to help James Bowen; giving directly to the Coastal Bank’s fund to help Tommy Palmer; or donating food for the fish fry/cookout.
