Garden City police on Sunday arrested two men in connection with an armed robbery Oct. 23 at a grocery store on Dean Forest Road.

Terrick Griggs, 23, and 20-year-old Tyreek Postell, both of Garden City, were taken into custody by police Sunday afternoon in front of the same location they allegedly robbed at gunpoint.

Two men — one of whom had a pistol — walked into the store at 1550 Dean Forest Road at about 9 p.m. on Oct. 23, said detective Cpl. Kurt Purtee, investigation supervisor for the Garden City police department. One of them took money and removed a necklace from a woman’s neck and one took the store’s cash register, Purtee said.

The two men ran into the parking lot and headed toward the Nassau Woods mobile home community. A witness chased after them, and the man with the gun turned around and shot at him, Purtee said. The witness was not injured.

Garden City police put out a description of a vehicle parked nearby that night they believed to be involved in the incident — a gray Ford Focus with dealer tags. On Sunday, Purtee said, someone called police after seeing a similar vehicle in the Nassau Woods area.

At about 3:30 p.m., police stopped the vehicle at the same strip-mall area that was robbed Oct. 23. The driver, Postell, ran from the car into the bathroom of a gas station, Purtee said, and Griggs, was detained immediately. Police believe Postell hid a pistol in a trash can before they got him out of the bathroom.

Witnesses from the Oct. 23 robbery identified both men as well as the gun, Purtee said.

They were taken to the Chatham County jail Sunday night, and both were charged with felony counts of armed robbery. Purtee said Griggs was also charged with felony aggravated assault and Postell was charged with being party to the crime of aggravated assault, also a felony.

Purtee said three other passengers in the car were arrested on drug-related charges he said were not related to the Oct. 23 armed robbery.
