Members of Savannah’s Jewish community gathered Sunday at the Jewish Educational Alliance on Abercorn Street to light the public menorah for Hanukkah.
An important aspect of Hanukkah, said Rabbi Ruven Barkan of Congregation Agudath Achim, is publicizing what the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights is all about.

“A central part of lighting the candles is sharing the light to remind us of the miracle,” Barkan said. “And I think it’s really appropriate for Savannah because we’re a small but very vibrant Jewish community here. We’re proud to be Jewish, and we have an important contribution to make to society.”
