Kekoa lives in Beaufort, S.C.

The pit bull used as a bait dog that was rescued by Effingham County Sheriff’s Office deputies in February is well and living with new owners in Beaufort, S.C.

Kekoa, whose name means “brave one” in Hawaiian, was emaciated and had multiple bite wounds when he was found along Old Louisville Road. He had dirt in his stomach and wounds that left bones exposed.

His teeth were cut or filed down, which frequently is done to bait dogs to keep them from injuring other dogs in a fight, said Effingham County Sheriff's Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor. The dog had other injuries consistent with dog fighting, Ehsanipoor said.

Kekoa was treated for bite wounds, an eye injury, ear infection, parasites and heartworms.

Many local people donated money to help pay for his recovery.

“We are pleased to let everyone know he is healthy and happy in his new home,” Ehsanipoor said. “Credit also goes to Dr. Brandy Bragg of the Rice Hope Animal Hospital in Port Wentworth as well as the (rescue group) Malachi Foundation.”
