A Rincon woman has been released from jail on a $20,000 bond following her arrest Tuesday evening on cruelty to children charges.

Laperia Mydell, 23, was arrested after her 3-year-old child was struck by a hit-and run driver on New Year’s Eve.

The investigation showed the Mydell left 3-year-old Jordan Mydell alone in an apartment at Goshen Crossing Apartments while she went shopping at a nearby gas station, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.

The toddler left the apartment and walked on Ga. 21 near Goshen Road. The little boy was struck by a vehicle traveling north on the divided roadway.

The child has been released from the hospital and is in the care of the Department of Family and Children Services.

Bond restrictions placed on Mydell by the chief magistrate, include no contact with her child and cooperation with the Department of Family and Children Services.

The driver of the vehicle has not yet been found.

Investigators have reported the vehicle may have been a late 1990s model Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Suburban or a van.

Ehsanipoor asked that anyone with information on the incident contact the sheriff’s office at 912-754-3449.
