Two Savannah residents were displaced and their dog was resuscitated Wednesday afternoon following a fire in a back bedroom of their West 40th Street house.

Savannah Fire firefighters responded to the call of smoke in the residence in the 600 block of West 40th just after noon, said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire spokesman. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, limiting them only to one room of the single-story house.

Other parts of the structure received smoke and fire damage, Keller said. Both residents escaped the fire without injuries but their dog was unresponsive after inhaling smoke.

Firefighters were able to resuscitate the dog with the use of a pet oxygen mask, Keller said.

All of Savannah Fire’s primary response vehicles are equipped with the masks that make providing life-saving oxygen to many types of pets much easier, he added.
