All lanes of U.S. 80 in Effingham County near the Chatham County line are now open following an accident involving a tractor-trailer and a bicyclist.
Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said the bike rider suffered serious injuries and was transported by LifeStar helicopter to Memorial University Medical Center.
The bike rider was crossing U.S. 80 near Zeigler Fork Road and crossed into the path of the truck, Ehsanipoor said.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor with the bike rider, who was holding a beer can while he crossed the roadway, Ehsanipoor said.
The truck driver does not appear to be at fault and it is not likely he will be charged.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
